Theatre Jazz - Theatre Jazz and Character are theatre dance extensions of folk, tap, and
ballet dancing which help to round out and enhance the skill and artistry of the dancer.
Although these forms of theatre dance are actually specialized fields, their techniques are
based on ballet and tap foundations. Theatre Jazz class (except Adult) is combined with
Tap. Level 3 and above: Ballet must be taken in conjunction with Tap/Jazz.
Tap - Tap dancing, the one true form of American theatre dance, develops in the student a
sensitive awareness of movement, rhythm, balance, flexibility, and the relationship of tap
dancing to all other forms of theatre dance. Tap class (except Adult) is combined with
Theatre Jazz. Level 3 and above: Ballet must be taken in conjunction with Tap/Jazz.
Ballet - Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles. Ballet training provides the best means
for developing a healthier, stronger body. It also develops an alert mind and a greater
appreciation for the arts. For students aspiring for a professional career in any form of
theatre dance, a thorough foundation in ballet is essential. Level 3 and above must be
enrolled in 2 classes per week.
Pre-School Dance - Courses for students 2-1/2 to 6 years of age. Rhythm training,
disciplined group activity and a basic foundation in elementary (non-technical) dance
movement are the prime purposes of preschool dance. Class consists of Pre-Jazz and
Pre-Ballet concepts, and Pre-Tap.
Lyrical - Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance. Lyrical is
generally smoother and a bit faster than ballet, but not quite as fast as jazz and uses
movement to express strong emotions. Usually performed to music with lyrics, the lyrics of
the chosen song serve as inspiration for movements and expressions. Ballet must be
taken in conjunction with Lyrical.
Pointe - Pointe technique for female students is added to regular ballet classes when
sufficient strength and skill are developed, and with the consent of the instructor.
Hip Hop - Hip hop developed from several cultures, including jazz, rock, tap and American
and Latino cultures. Hip hop is a very energetic form of dancing. It is unique in that it allows
its dancers to perform with freedom of movement, adding in their own personalities.
